NW CUP 2008 Report - By saurabh Verma
|
| | PROUD NEWS FOR NWCL | | Thursday, June 12, 2008 | | The following players have been selected into the Northwest Region Squad competing in National tournament in Houston. 1) Vijay Beniwal (Captain of NWR) 2)Saurabh Verma 3) Puneet Soti 4)Srikanth Sundaragopalan 5) Srinivas Raghavan.
I am sure they will do NWCL very proud. Vijay Beniwal is named Captain of the NWR team. This is, by far, the most shining moment of NWCL history to-date. While we take a moment to appreciate how far we have come as a league, we should realize that our next goal is to get one of our cricketers into the US team.
Excellent performance in this tournament can directly(potentially) lead to a place in US team. This indeed is a glorious moment for NWCL and hope the latter would also happen which would be a jewel in the crown.
Do give them your best wishes and the support.
A BIG THANK YOU to all the people involved in making this happen.
Go NWCL |

Bowling highlights:
Rajesh Ganesan 3/49, Srikanth S 2/22, Samarth 2/48 | | Microsoft Greens: 242 for 5 in 34.2 overs
Batting highlights:
Samarth[MoM] 60(78), Rajesh Ganesan 36(23), Srikanth S 35 n.o.(36), Naveen 35 (24), Arun Kumar 27(23), Nikhil 23(24)
Bowling highlights:
Sanjay Naik 2/31, Murali 1/19
Man of the match:
Samarth Shah from WSU-Pullman | | Other notables
• As has become the custom, most of the Greens decided to prepare for the match at the Moscow (Idaho) sports bar the previous night of the match. After some intense preparation that ran well past midnight, the Greens decided they’d done enough planning and called it a night.
• Within a few hours their first plan went for a toss. Get it? WSU won the toss and elected to bat.
• The Greens opening bowlers Harish and Srikanth started well, getting the wickets of Dilip and Narendra Parmar. However, Harsimranjeet Singh (Harry) kicked the WSU innings into high gear, by launching a mighty six over midwicket.
• At this point, Rajesh Ganesan was introduced into the attack, and straightaway got the wicket of Ranganath. Things could have gotten much worse for WSU at this point, if the Greens had managed to hold onto a couple of easy chances offered by Harry and Ritesh. These dropped catches proved very expensive.
• Harry went on to make 55, before Naveen finally got rid of him. Ritesh played some delightful shots to top score for WSU with 71. Murali and Amit chipped in with 33 and 22 respectively. Jayaram helped WSU finish strongly with a couple of boundaries towards the end. WSU finally finished with 240 for 9.
• For the Greens, Srikanth bowled a tidy spell, finishing with 2/22. Rajesh and Samarth also had good spells, finishing with 3/49 and 2/48 from 8 overs each. The Greens began their reply in style, with Nikhil dispatching every loose ball offered to the boundary. Samarth at the other end, started steadily. Nikhil finally got out to a good catch by Narendra after making 23 (24 balls).
• Naveen was the next batsman. He made a quick fire 35, that included 3 enormous 6’s before getting out to an excellent delivery from Sanjay Naik. Arun and Samarth then took over. They had an excellent 52 run partnership in 7.1 overs.
• Notably, Samarth smacked 2 6’s off Jayaram! This was payback for the 2 boundaries that Jayaram had scored of his bowling in the WSU inning. Eventually Arun got out at well made 27 and Samarth made the highest score of the Greens inning, before getting out to Harry for a well constructed 60.
• Srikanth S and Rajesh Ganesan then had a very quick partnership of 58 in 6.4 overs, making light work of the remaining target. Rajesh Ganesan fell to Sanjay Naik, when just 8 runs were required, but not before making a quick fire 36 in 23 deliveries.
• Srikanth remained unbeaten on an excellent 35 and Aniruddha finished of the match in style, with a boundary. Greens remain unbeaten so far this season, with their 7th consecutive win. |

• Boeing once again proved their strength in batting and playing as a team. Whole game was played with tremendous energy even though it was around 90 degrees in the sun.
• Boeing batsmen’s big shots were spectacular. On a hot summer’s day, it was worth watching the ball racing through thick grass because of the sheer and brute force Boeing batsmen exhibited.
